We watched this Aboriginal film in my culture class today called Ten Canoes. I can’t really explain what it was about because there was so much going on. There was a present time which was in B&W and a past time that was also supposed to represent the future that was in color. It was pretty much centered around this Aboriginal idea of DreamTime. Extremely interesting story but all in Indigenous language. With all the unfamiliar concepts as well as the language barrier/subtitles it was kind of hard to grasp. What helped me was discussing it after the fact.
How the ideas presented are considerably different than in the United States and modern day European societies. Among other things, my professor said that naturally, the world tends to produce more women than men. It is a known fact, apparently, that the population is 53% women and 47% percent men……..
That got me thinking. One of the main characters in the film does have three wives…..
See where I’m going with this? No? Polygamy ya’ll, polygamy! You’re supposed to take more wives. That’s how the world works! I’m gonna have me about 3 wives and 2 husbands…just to even it out you know.
